Angels triumph over Rams in shoot out
[b]Angels hosted a very strong Ramsgate team from the Southern division on Sunday in the quarter finals of the league cup. Angels keeper Luke O’Grady was gutted after failing a late fitness test following a back injury and reserve Goal Keeper Nat Gibbs stepping up for his first game between the sticks in over a year. Angels knew it would be a tough game with Ramsgate containing four Kent players but extra inspiration for the boys was now apparent wanting the cup run to continue for Luke whose penalty heroics got them through the last round.[/b[
Ramsgate started very strong, keeping good possession but Angels felt their way into the game and created the better half chances. Angels started to enjoy better possession but the first real chance fell to Ramsgate, their lightning right winger breaking through and forcing a fantastic one handed save from Gibbs. That seemed to galvanise the away side but also settled Gibbs nerves. Ramsgate continued to attack the danger mainly coming down the right side and Angels glad left back Kian Austin was on top form. Ramsgate forcing a number of corners which were delivered superbly and Joe Tyrie and Toby Kent defending them valiantly. Billy Kent continued to lead the line for Angels with George Walker sitting in the whole and his pace was now starting to cause a real problem for the visitors. However, Angels fell behind to a well taken Ramsgate goal just before the half and went in 1-0 down and were grateful to a number of saves from Nat Gibb and last ditched tackles from Toby Kent to keep them in the game. Ramsgate definitely the better of the teams in the first half.
Angels made a couple of changes Hermitage moving from Centre Midfield back to left to give better balance and Toby Lansdowne now moving further forward. Smith joining Tyrie in midfield to add extra legs and Walker switching to right . Angels started the second half much better, Walker causing the Rams all kinds of problems with his pace and the visitors having to bring him down constantly. The equaliser came from fine work down the left between Hermitage and Lansdowne, Lansdowne squaring the ball across the area and Billy Kent arriving to fire home with his left foot. Angels now buoyed and playing the better football continued to take the game to Ramsgate but the visitors were looking very dangerous on the break and winning a penalty and the chance to put them in front. A great spot kick ! but Gibbs springing across the area to push onto the post and then diving on the ball before they could follow up.
Angels continued to attack Balcombe having a couple of good long range efforts and Walker a constant thorn for them and it was the man Walker that put them in front. Great work from Dan Wates down the right side and Walker hitting a great half volley on his left foot to put Angels 2-1 up.
With 10 minutes left Angels tried to shut up shop Balcombe, Rowe, Raffelt, Kent and Austin had been magnificent in defence, Ramsgate pushed for the equaliser and a great ball behind the defence sent their winger away, Gibbs raced off his line bravely colliding with the winger and both players needing treatment. It was cracking game of football and fitting Ramsgate got an equaliser, Angels failing to clear the ball and their striker firing home. The game now going into extra time both teams not wanting to lose the game but a great chance for Ramsgate to snatch with seconds left, the ball falling from a corner to the powerful Rams midfielder 5 yards out but Chester Smith bravely throwing himself in front to deny a certain winner.
A fantastic game of football which no team deserved to lose but penalties to decide. The visitors winning the toss and taking first. Hermitage, Lansdowne, Tyrie and Walker all converting Smith having his penalty saved and the spin taking it onto the bar but over. Sudden death Ramsgate convert pressure on up steps Kian Brown and coolly slots away, Ramsgate convert again Kian Austin nerves of steel, Ramsgate score again Toby Kent magnificent throughout smashes home but this time Gibbs brilliantly tips over. Up steps Dan Wates and fires Angels into the semi finals 8-7 !
Angels will now face Erith & Belvedere away in the semi final, Erith a giant of a side and regarded as probably the strongest team across North, Central and South.
Have a great Xmas break everyone
