Vital win for U13s against Langton Green
Final runner up league spot beckons
Tonbridge Angels made the short trip to Tunbridge Wells on Sunday to play local rivals and good friends Langton Green. Nine of the teams having played district football together the day before.
Both teams know each other’s game very well and Angels won the toss and kicked with a very strong wind for the first half. The first real chance fell to Langton Green but a fantastic goal line clearance from Dan Wates stopped a certain goal. The wind had a big influence on the game and Angels started to dominate, good work down the left hand side between Hermitage and Austin lead to the opener for Toby Lansdowne firing across the goal keeper into the corner to score on his Birthday.
The second goal arrived shortly after from a corner. A fantastic delivery by Austin, great run by Walker to drag the big defender out of the box and David Howie timing his run to perfection to powerfully crash home a bullet of a header. Angels were then to add a third Howie picked up the ball in the centre carried to the edge of the box and hit a thunderous shot into the top corner. Angels stretched the pitch very well Hermitage and Austin held the width on the left side all game particularly well and were constant outlets throughout the game.
The wind was so strong and Angels knew it was going to be a game of two very different half’s, Langton were struggling to get the ball out and when they did Austin and Smith were quickly into the tackle. Both centre-halves Balcombe and Toby Kent were focussed with goal keeper Nat Gibb always wanting the ball and looking to play from the back. Angels were now looking dominant and added two more before half time Walker using that electric pace to get in behind the defence and tucking away neatly and then seizing on a defensive error to again finish well.
Half time and Angels lead 5-0 but would now be kicking against the wind, the team knew if they could see through the first 10 minutes or so without conceding they would be comfortable and they did. As expected Langton had more possession and Raffelt and Rowe both preferred in defensive midfield this week worked tirelessly to deny the Langton midfield space. Langton’s first goal came midway through the second half, an un-defendable ball into the box that Austin did his best to head over but a second goal came shortly after. Again a good ball into the box and Austin winning a fantastic header to the edge but Angels failed to close down quickly enough and Langton fired into the top corner. Angels looked a little wobbly for a few minutes but then shut up shot. Howie had bossed the midfield all game for the second week in a role and now sat in front of the back four. A good win by Raffelt and Walker was away again to complete his hat-trick and put the game to bed.
A win next week would guarantee a final 2nd place in the U13 Ryman Youth League Central.
