Tonbridge Angels U13 6 Greenway Aces 0
Angels welcome first three points!
After a tough first two fixtures against two sides who have been together for a number years, we found ourselves preparing for a different task this week. Greenway Aces, a relatively new side to the KYL scene. After Glebe beat Greenway 19-0 on the opening day of the season, we kept our feet on the floor and new we would face a new and improved Greenway team.
The Angels started the game back in our usual shape, with new signing Walker in at centre back alongside Wallis, we were always going to be difficult to break down. With Hodges and Monaghan bombing up and down, we also posed a threat from the back. With the dogged and determined pairing of Hollamby and Dennis in front dispossessing Greenway at every opportunity thus allowing the pace of attack to penetrate multiple times! The attack consisted of Lavington, Shields, Barden and Abdulahe.
The Angels started the brighter and within all of 10 seconds we had a break when Abdulahe chased down the kick off and dispossessed the left back, only to see some smart defending from the opposition centre half. The attacking four of the blues were reacting to the goalkeeper's short and weak goal kicks and were starting to create chance after chance. Abdulahe was being brilliantly defended throughout the first 10 minutes from a powerful centre back. However, on nine minutes, the Angels' pressure paid off. The ball breaking out 35 yards to the left after another Angels attack, fell to left back Hodges. With everyone rushing out of the box, Hodges found the composure to play a first time ball over the top, perfectly finding Abdulahe. A delicate touch, matched with a finish into the bottom corner, 1-0 Angels.
The pressure began to mount, and seldom attacks were brought quickly to an end by our defensive unit but a number of Angels chances were missed. Barden having two consecutive chances within two minutes of one another found himself in despair after missing the target on both occasions!
Sensing the opportunity to attack, Jones was brought on for Lavington to provide Angels with a flat two up top! And after a constant stream of Angels’ attacks and possession, the change paid off. Jones dropping deep to then slide Abdulahe through, his cross shot was met at the back post by Shields in the 33rd minute. The Angels work rate was epitomised as Shields had won the ball back no more than 20 seconds before the goal ... deep inside his own half!
The Angels took a very comfortable 2-0 lead into half time, however this could have easily been eight with better decision making!
A host of changes in the second half kept the Angels fresh with Munns replacing Hollamby, Kirkby for Barden, Wolvey for Shields.
The Angels put the pressure on Greenway from the start getting the ball forward in the first 10 seconds, ensuring that Greenway knew they were in for a defensive onslaught! The Angels didn't have to wait long for the first goal of the second half. After just one minute, a cross from the right was half cleared from Greenway, however Jones was on hand to nod it down to Abdulahe who scrambled this one into the net!
The Angels continued to pile on pressure but never looked in danger on the counter. Wallis and Walker are starting to form a great partnership.
In the 47th minute the Angels struck again, this time Abdulahe turning provider for a Jones finish. A devastating turn of pace from the front man, he cut back to the edge of the box where Jones was on hand to finish smartly. And just two minutes later the sub finished again. A sublime reverse ball from Munns found Jones in acres of space and he punished with a great finish.
Credit to Hollamby, Munns and Dennis in the middle as they won the ball back all game providing the opportunity to attack!
Jones was to complete his hat trick on 55 minutes. An outswinging corner from Shields somehow found the feet of Jones who half-volleyed brilliantly into the corner. After only playing 30 minutes Jones had hit a hat trick and also picked up an assist. An impact performance from someone who certainly knows where the net is! His strike partner Abdulahe also deserves credit, setting up Jones twice.
Greenway tried hard to pinch a goal, however, our aim was a clean sheet, and the defence stayed switch on, with fresh legs coming on to keep the tempo high, Greenway just couldn't break through. Lawrence replaced Hodges late on, with all subs being put back on for another stint.
Larkin in the Angels goal deserves great credit. One save to make which came in the 66th minute, plucking the ball out from the top corner excellently! Somehow managing to hold it, deserving great credit for staying concentrated to preserve the clean sheet. The Angels managed to keep the ball for long periods of the final 10 minutes looking to get valuable touches on the ball!
The Angels couldn't find another goal despite trying relentlessly! The game finished 6-0.
Credit to Greenway who kept going throughout, some great saves from their keeper kept the score down. They also had two or three standout players on the day, a dude who will only get better!
But for the Angels, a welcome three points as we prepare to take on free scoring Glebe next Sunday. A tough fixture against a side who have scored 46 goals in their opening three league fixtures!
