Cup delight for Young Angels
Comprehensive win for U13s
Cup delight for young Angels!!
After a tough few weeks for the boys , we travelled to Gravesend for a cup tie with Greenway Aces. With three players away, we were left with one sub , allowing players to play for prolonged period and build themselves into the game without frequent subs.
The Angels set up very attacking having already played this outfit, setting up with a high press aiming to trap the opposition in their defensive third. Larkin guarded the goal with Ryan Silk, Ilyas Walker and Harvey Lawrence in front to protect. A midfield of Mike Hollamby , Joe Wallis, Nathan Kirkby and Jacob Hodges supported the attack of Fin Wolvey, Ben Shields and Frankie Lavington!
The Angels applied early pressure from our kick off chasing a long ball into the corner, having boxed the Aces in, they failed to clear allowing for Lavington to cross from the opposite side into the box. Wolvey's snapshot was smartly saved by the keeper, however and Lavington cross was guided home from close range by Kirkby, with only 62 seconds on the clock. This early goal set the tone, however Greenway made it difficult flooding the central area with bodies making it difficult to find patterns of play.
A much improved Greenway side were putting up a fight but Wolvey scored a killer goal on 16 minutes. Brilliant work again down the right from Frankie Lavington , beating his man with perfect final product , Wolvey capitalised on a defensive misjudgement to slot home. Angels carried on dominating, with Hollamby going whiskers away with a well struck volley from 30 yards. The hosts were clinging on and rarely threatened on the break. Larkin did well to clean up any hint of an attack as a sweeper keeper!!
The Angels hit fine form 5 minutes before the half, excellent work rate from 'Shieldsy' lead to panic from the Greenway keeper who sliced his clearance to allow 'Shieldsy' to tap home from 6 yards! Another one came shortly after, a sublime defence splitting pass from Joe Wallis set Lavington on his way out on the right , his deep cross somehow evaded everyone including the 'keeper and found its way high into the goal!
4-0 up at HT and cruising. The aim now was to match the first half to keep a clean sheet!
However the Angels started this half very slow defensively and were lucky to still be 4 up, two Greenway efforts slid just wide. 8 minutes in Joe Wallis delivered a deep free kick which again evaded everyone , bounced over the Greenway goalkeeper but also found its way past the post! However , some great work from Monaghan to win a free kick all of 35-40 yards from goal gave Wallis another chance to deliver. Following managerial instructions he had a dig at goal. The result was outstanding, a sweetly struck effort whistled past the keeper and into the left hand corner. An outstanding effort from range..
It wasn't long before the Angels added another with 50' on the clock Lavington was to wrap up a fine afternoon's work with his second goal. A powerful Ben Shields effort from 18 yards out was parried , Lavington was sharpest to react to put the ball into the net.
The Angels spent the majority of this second half in the Greenway Aces third but the Aces defended in numbers and made it tough to penetrate. Another long range free kick from Wallis was saved well by the GK.
The last five minutes saw a huge lapse in concentration from the Angels, perhaps against a more clinical side would have been punished . They had goalkeeper Matt Larkin to thank as he pulled out three top draw saves to preserve the clean sheet!
No more goals for the Angels as this one finished 6-0. A fine result , and an effective performance. News filtered through that Ksports had beaten Ebbsfleet 4-3 , and would be our opponents in the next round. Having beaten Ksports 1-0 in pre season, this should be a good tie!
MOM- 2 goals, 2 assists and some mesmerising wide play. Frankie Lavington.
