U13s lose to Sevenoaks in Derby game
Lapses in concentration prove costly
On Sunday The Angels travelled to high flying Sevenoaks Town on there new state of the art 3G, a wonderful playing surface! Only allowing us to get onto the 3G ten minutes before kick off meant the boys weren't fully used to the surface at kick off.
The Angels on the back of a 6-0 win in the cup, and Sevenoaks having scored 26 goals in their previous two games were on a high.
The Angels started brightly , enforcing our game plan excellently , keeping Sevenoaks wide and dealing with crosses. a different look to our team this week with the ever present Matt Larkin in goal. Tom Monaghan and Jacob Hodges started well at full back, forcing their opposition into wide areas excellently. In the middle of the defence Harvey Lawrence and Ilyas Walker were dealing with crosses well.
The fast start needed to be topped off with a goal. James Munns, Joe Wallis and Mike Hollamby tied down Sevenoaks' middle three with ease early on, allowing Frank Lavington, Ben Shields and AK to try and break through.
After defending well for the first twenty minutes, the boys grew in confidence and had 2/3 half chances to break the Sevenoaks back line. The two sides looking evenly matched after Sevenoaks' 5-0 victory over us earlier in the season.
However, Sevenoaks notched ahead after a through ball beat our defence rather easily, and the Sevenoaks striker finished well. The goal really hurt the Angels as they felt they were in the game up until this point. The following ten minutes , Angels allowed their heads to dropped. Sevenoaks added insult to injury when a cross evaded everyone and snuck into the back post. Quickly followed by another goal before the break.
Angels undone by a ten minute spell in the first half which arguably finished the game off. However , after breeding confidence into the boys at half time, we were sure we'd get a response. With Ryan Silk going into left back after a monuments challenge in our own box from Hodges forced him off. Kirkby, Wolvey and Dennis also entered the fray during the second half.
The Angels almost looked like they were suffering a first half hangover when Sevenoaks scored an avoidable fourth goal. And added to this soon after. A 20 minute spell either side of half time was the difference. Where Sevenoaks held their shape and concentration, the Angels didn't quite manage the same feat.
However, credit to the boys. They got together with 15 minutes to go and they really got stuck in. 5-0 down playing like they were 1-0 up. Munns dropping in at CB to allow us to push players forward was receiving the ball on the edge of his own box to build play. Some absolutely brilliant bits of play in that last quarter of the game. This lead to the Angels getting on the scoresheet. Munns stepping into win the ball from that back, linked through midfield who got the ball to hard working striker AK. He took it upon himself to drive at the Sevenoaks defence , beating two or three players before beating the 'keeper at his front post. A top goal from the young Angels striker.
The boys continued to play lovely stuff in the final 15 minutes and looked like scoring more. Not to be this time, but had we been a bit more clinical early on with our final product this could have been a different game. A 20 minutes lapse in concentration cost us today. Very proud of the boys for the work rate, and how they played in stages of the game.
A flattering score line for Sevenoaks, but our best performance so far, in terms of the way we moved the ball. Riding the storm either side of half term is our next task!
The Young Angels showing what they are fully capable of! Time to kick on and get some positive results!!
