Important cup win for U13s
Angels comeback well deserved
A huge game in the boys season as we took on K Sports in the last 16 of the KYL Cup. Having already beaten K Sports 1-0 in pre season we knew it would be tight, and we knew K Sports had a point to prove.
This certainly took shape to be a brilliant game. The Angels took 10/15 minutes to accustom to a new formation, with K Sports coming out of the block fast. Goalkeeper Matt Larkin was magnificent early on pulling of 5/6 great saves in the first 20 minutes. However K Sports to break the deadlock on 22 minutes as a cross from the K Sports left found and unmarked striker to slot home.
Last Sunday, heads went down at 1-0 and the boys folded from there. But today the young Angels had a grit and determination to stay positive. This goal seemed to give Angels an extra 50%. Now getting into our passing rhythm finding some great passages of play. K Sports were still a threat in behind but the Angels defence of Joe Wallis, Jacob Hodges and Ilyas Walker dealt with it well!
HT Angels 0-1 K Sports
With the boys going out for the second half fired up and motivated, the management sensed something special coming!
And they would be right!! The Angels came our firing , with fresh legs in attack K Sports were begging to become overwhelmed . The boys began to play some great stuff and this paid of when a fanatic move down left set AK through, bearing down on the goal, the K Sports keeper seemed to slip and allowed AK to slot in at the near post!!
And what a game that ensued, both teams going at eachother ! However Angels looked the fitter, looked more hungry, with Mike Hollamby and James Munns controlling the game from deep central positions, using the energy and width of Alfie Dennis and Ryan Silk out wide, a chance was always likely. Ben Shields joined AK up front and his ever present work rate was phenomenal allowing us to win the ball back high.
Soon after, it was Angels who struck again, this time some very tidy play through the centre saw James Munns slot AK through again, a great finish across the keeper to put the Angels ahead.
With the Angels slowing the game down through subs who all worked exceptionally hard coming into a tough game, K Sports looked very depleted.
Angels did almost manage to extend their gap, with the most breathtaking move , GK Matt Larkin played out from the back finding Joe Wallis at CB, the ball made its way wide to Alfie Dennis who linked up twice down the fight with James Munns and Ben Shields, before some fantastic footwork from Shields and a fantastic bit of skill from Dennis allowed him a shot, which narrowly missed the target. This move on its own shows the development these boys have made .
The work rate didn't stop as we had strikers working back to LB to win the ball back. Full time sounded and it was a fantastic win for Angels. This see's us into the quarter final to play Ramsgate at Home.
Man of the match today was the whole squad, took a fantastic effort to comeback from 1-0 down. AK's double also took him to 10 for the season from just 9 appearances.
