U13s in Cup semi-final
Defensive masterclass sees Angels through against Ramsgate
Our first game in 2018 served up a treat. A quarter final against a strong Ramsgate side who have only lost 2 games all season so far. One league and one cup. This was never going to be an easy game. And with Hadlow College declaring grass pitches unplayable early Friday morning, the Angels were forced into playing this game on Mascalls Academy 3G pitch . Ramsgate came into this tie in good cup form having scored 12 and conceded 3 in previous rounds including a 6-1 away win last round.
This was a true cup tie with both teams going at it head to head. From the off it looked like it would be a battle of who's defence could hold firm. The first 25 minutes of the game Angels dominated the majority of the game , keeping Ramsgate pinned back. However couldn't really boast a clear cut chance or even muster a shot on goal. Ramsgate weathered the early storm and came back strong. In the final ten minutes Ramsgate dominated the game , and the Angels found possession difficult to maintain. However some great work from GK Matt Larkin, and some superb defensive challenges from Jacob Hodges, Joe Wallis and Ilyas Walker kept the scores level at half time.
Half time came and subs were made, noticeable Frank Lavington came on in the middle of the park , a slight change of structure in the midfield three proved dividend. Ramsgate were no longer allowed to play out from deep, and the early play was all Angels. 10 minutes into the half, Lavington broke after good defensive play on the left hand side from Ilyas Walker. Lavington beat two men before providing a sublime outside of the boot through ball to the on rushing path of Abdulahe Abduluadir (AK) , who slotted this chance away with his left foot into the bottom left corner. 1-0 Angels. This was not before James Munns set Ben Shields away, his snap shot went just wide.
The Angels continued to press hard , and just 5 minutes later this paid of . Great persistence down the left from Nathan Kirkby, lead to Lavington again weaving past his man this time inside the box where he was brought down by the Ramsgate defender. Seemingly the only way to stop an inform Lavington! Who was subsequently injured and had to be substituted. AK stepped up and slotted his penalty just left of central to give the Angels breathing space . AK now up to 12 goals for the season, and Lavington with his 7th assist of the season.
New faces were introduced, Harvey Lawrence and Ryan Silk slotted into a now back 5 to help preserve the lead, both putting in some great challenges late on. Fin Wolvey replaced Ben Shields up front , and his work rate was superb in defending from the front.
The Angels had the ball in the back of the net again 10 minutes before time... however Kirkby's goal was ruled out for offside by the linesman. Ramsgate again came on strong, some superb tackle, battling and determination saw the Angels through. Angels could of had another as AK was seemingly through on goal, when taken down last man by the Ramsgate number 5 who received a yellow card. However the Angels dug in until full time to beat Ramsgate 2-0.
A hugely impressive defensive performance from the Young Angels on a tough windy day. Some outstanding football played today, all the way from back to front from the ever improving side. The defence is going to have to be on top form in the coming weeks though, as we take on Glebe two weeks in a row. Firstly in the league... and then in the cup semi finals!
Glebe are unbeaten so far, having notched 115 goals in only 15 games this season. This is the only barrier standing in front of The Angels and a cup final!!
