Ladies start 2017 in fine style
Convincing win at Anchorians Development
Angels Ladies banished their 2016 away hoodoo in style on Sunday, by producing their best performance of the season and completing a convincing 5-1 victory at Anchorians Development.
Tonbridge took the lead after 16 minutes when a through ball from Jodie Coombes released Abigail Skilton who shot firmly past the goalkeeper. Three minutes later the lead was doubled – skipper and defender Beth Kemp gambled on pushing up for a throw-in and then scored a fine solo goal, curling a shot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the area.
Chances were by now beginning to come along thick and fast for the Angels, with Jodie Coombes particularly unfortunate not to open her account, hitting a shot over the bar from close range while at full stretch. The crucial three-goal cushion was finally achieved before half-time with Courtney Smith both starting an attacking move and completing it with a cool finish.
The 3-0 lead enabled the team to be ambitious with their substitutions by making two changes at half-time. One of those coming on, Megan Akehurst, steered a shot wide before going even closer with her second chance, lashing a shot against the underside of the bar with the referee adjudicating that the ball had not crossed the line.
A glimmer of hope arrived for the home side when a shot from distance dipped into the top corner after 76 minutes. However the end result was never really in any serious doubt and Skilton was able to grab her second, and her 19th goal of the season, with two minutes left on the clock.
There was still time for a fifth Angels goal in injury time, when Becky Saxby hit a looping cross from wide on the right which sailed over everyone and into the net.
There’s no league game for the Angels next Sunday – instead they host Dartford in a friendly on the 3G pitch at Hayesbrook School. Kick off is at 2pm.
