Comprehensive win for our Ladies
Brace for Becky Janes
Angels Ladies moved up to third place after a convincing 5-0 win away to Castle Colts on Sunday.
Tonbridge were in complete control from the outset but it wasn't until the 23rd minute before the Colts defence was breached for the first time, Megan Akehurst getting her first goal for the club in her first competitive start. Several opportunities to increase the lead came and went, Becky Janes firing a shot over the bar then having a second effort superbly saved by Colts keeper Charlotte Brown, and Abbie Skilton through on goal only to hit the post. Eventually the lead was doubled in first half stoppage time with Janes finally getting the better of Brown with her first goal since November.
The win looked to be secure when Becky Saxby was played in with only the keeper to beat, and a calm finish for her second goal in as many games made it 3-0. Two minutes later it was four, Courtney Smith making a surging run down the left and firing home on the angle. The Angels survived a scare at the back when a high ball struck the angle of cross bar and post, before Janes rounded things off with the fifth and final goal ten minutes from time. The result ensured a first clean sheet of the season for goalkeeper Tracy Edwards and the team as a whole.
With three of the four remaining league games to be played against the two sides immediately above and below them, the race for second place is well and truly on - but first the Ladies must turn their attention to the Quarter Final of the Kent Divisional Cup which will be played this Sunday. Standing in their way are a familiar foe, the league leaders and favourites for the cup, Maidstone United. Kick off is 1.30pm at K Sports, Cobdown.
