Angels Ladies sting the Wasps
Eleven strong squad get the win in final pre-season friendly
The Ladies team were forced to field a bare 11 players for the first time since forming, due to injuries and holidays, as they completed their pre-season programme with a visit to Premier Division side Crawley Wasps Reserves. Crawley had the luxury of using seven substitutes including a number of players from their promising Development squad. This was not ideal preparation on a hot summer afternoon but the team rallied to produce one of their best performances and results with the match going Angels' way by four goals to two.s
Wasps took an early fifth minute lead from a direct free kick but Jodie Coombes levelled matters a minute later with a dead ball effort of her own, curling her free kick into the top corner from 25 yards out. Tonbridge then took the lead in the 18th minute with Megan Akehurst also finding the upper reaches of the net from the edge of the box. They had chances to extend their lead with Akehurst hitting the post and Becky Janes putting a shot wide before the hosts equalised from yet another free kick on 35 minutes. Once again the Angels reacted positively and were back in front within a minute. Coombes was put through on goal by a perfect through ball from Janes and scored with a fine shot into the roof of the net.
Janes increased the lead to 4-2 three minutes into the second half with a perfectly executed shot on the angle. There would be no further inroads on the scoresheet with both goalkeepers forced into making good saves.
The team now has one final pre-season training session on Thursday before opening their league campaign next Sunday with a tricky visit to Maidstone-based Vinters.
