Lauryn Underhill grabs four goals
Tonbridge Angels Ladies completed their season in style with a 9-0 rout of Sittingbourne at their Woodstock Sports stadium.
With Sittingbourne only just starting their pre-season fixtures, the game was split into three periods of 30 minutes but this only served to accentuate the gap in fitness between the two squads, as Tonbridge romped away with the win in the final half hour.
Lauryn Underhill opened the scoring in the 7th minute, chipping the home goalkeeper, then doubled the lead in the 29th minute when her cross/shot looped over the keeper and in.
Another two goals were scored in the middle period with Becky Janes applying the finish on 34 minutes before Underhill completed a hat trick on 42 minutes with a curling shot rebounding in off the post.
With the hard work done, the Angels were able to play with freedom in the final 30 minutes and were 5-0 up through Becky Janes within 40 seconds of the restart. Underhill grabbed her fourth, and Tonbridge’s sixth, on 69 minutes before Janes collected her own hat-trick on 75.
Three minutes later an excellent individual goal by Becky Mackley made it eight and then Mackley scored the Angels’ ninth and final goal with five minutes left on the clock.
The Ladies now open their 2018/19 campaign by making their bow in the SSE Women’s FA Cup on Sunday, away to London Kent Football United.
“We face an incredibly tough start on Sunday against a side which counted Gillingham as a scalp last season”, said manager Dan Couldridge. “However we are as prepared as we can possibly be. The performance today shows what is possible when the whole team buys into the system that Reece [assistant manager] and I are trying to put in place. We must now take that confidence and belief into what will be a challenging and competitive season.”
