Angels Ladies picked up their first tournament success on a blazing hot Sunday in Sussex, by winning the inaugural Bexhill United Ladies Tournament.
17 teams took part in the competition with Tonbridge winning a highly competitive Group 2 with ten points from their five games. Sara Walker scored the only goal in both the Angels' opening games to get her side off to a flying start. The third match looked to be heading for a goalless draw until Becky Janes let fly from distance to score off the post in injury time for a third win in a row.
A 0-0 draw in the fourth game was enough to secure top spot before the team slipped to their only defeat of the day in the final match, 0-1. A tough Quarter Final followed against Ashford and our girls looked to be heading out of the competition after going behind early on, until Becky Mackley's injury time header saved her team from the exit. Penalties ensued with Mackley, Rosie Hague, Janes and Helena Fothergill all on target and goalkeeper Kelly Moran saving twice to win the shootout 4-2.
The Angels faced Wandsworth in the semi final which ended with neither goal being breached leaving spot kicks to decide the team's fate once again. And in a repeat of the previous round, Moran saved two kicks with Mackley, Hague, Janes and Fothergill scoring in a 4-2 win.
Eastbourne Town, of the London & South East Regional League (Level 5), were the Final opponents. Tonbridge took an early lead through a well worked team goal finished calmly by Walker, before Eastbourne levelled via an unorthodox route - Moran's clearance being closed down by a forward and pinballing into the net. However it was to be the Angels day with Janes backheeling a short corner by Mackley past the goalkeeper.
The team were expertly marshalled in defence by Poppy Gilden, finally back from her 18-month lay-off following a double knee operation.
Thanks to Bexhill United who did a great job organising their first tournament. We are back to face them again next Sunday for a friendly at Bexhill College, kick off at 2pm.
