No joy for U21s at Gander Green Lane
Chances not taken
We went into this match with the strongest squad possible at this stage with all players available. The main focus was to help the players gel and maintain a high level of intensity in our play knowing that this is how Sutton would be also.
After a frantic start and Sutton putting plenty of pressure on our back four it looked like we would weather the storm until 20 minutes in when, once again, a mistake trying to get us on the front foot was punished and we found ourselves 1-0 down. For the rest of the half it was very much a midfield battle with both teams working hard to try and gain some possession. It was an even half, however, Sutton had a little more intensity in their play.
The half time team talk seemed to gee our players up, mainly due to the presence of Steve McKimm and the players looking to show themselves. The second half was, for most of it, us on the front foot and making a few very good chances to get back in the game however squandering the chances. A solid second half performance allowed us to see that the squad is coming together and there is plenty of desire for these players to push on over the coming season. The second goal was scored in the dying minutes of the game after making several changes and the Sutton players being a little sharper in the end. Overall, looking at performance rather than result, there were even more positives to take away from a good work out.
