Angels U14 scrappy win
Difficult pitch conditions
Angels faced a trip to Gravesend on Sunday to play Greenway Aces, the pitch had already been played on in the morning and was very bobbly and small making passing very difficult. The Angels started very strongly and Greenway who have struggled to get results so far this season put a lot of players behind the ball.
Angels were able to play with 3 players up front but Greenway defended ruggedly making a couple of last ditch tackles from Kian Austin, Billy Kent and Toby Lansdowne. Greenway played with the one striker up front but he was a real handful with power and pace, Murphy winning a number of aerial challenges with him. Angels finally made the breakthrough from a free kick, Greenway expecting the ball to be played into the box but Toby Kent had given a clever option to change the angle and the ball was played out to Kent who hit a great first time shot that the keeper could only parry into the net. However, Greenway responded almost instantly the long ball up with Angels unable to clear and the striker beating Gibb to the ball to slot home. Angels continued to completely dominate but tried carrying the ball too often, allowing Greenway to clear forward, the defence of Balcombe, Murphy, Hermitage and Kent largely untroubled and allowed to join the attack for a lot of the game but the first half finished 1-1
Second half and Angels made three changes and it was a similar story Greenway putting most of the team behind the ball and Angels getting all the possession. Wilkins and Howie continued to drive forward and Tyrie held the midfield but after the first quarter Angels still had not made the breakthrough. Wates had started to put some great crosses into the box and Angels were starting to look very threatening down the right side. Wilkins then went on a trade mark powerful run beating two players and hitting a fantastic strike that the keeper got fingers tips, the ball hitting both posts and coming back out to Lansdowne but he was unable to wrap his foot around it. It was starting to look like one of those days, some good balls into the box but Greenway defending valiantly and sensing a point was on offer. Then Wilkins picked up the ball again and drove down that right side beating two players and hitting a rocket of a shot again smashing off the post but this time crashing in, it was a fantastic strike. However, yet again the ball was played up to the Greenway striker Angels failed to clear and he striker got to the ball first and slotted pass Gibb.
Strangely though while a lot of teams would have just accepted this wasn't their day this seem to really galvanise the young Angels and this time Billy Kent powered down the right beat two players and squared for Lansdowne to roof the ball into the net and put Angels 3-2 up. This time they would not let the lead slip and Kent then added himself this time slotting cooly under the keeper for the Angels to win 4-2.
It wasn't Angels best performance of the season with conditions difficult and Greenway defending very well but 3 points in the bag.
