Goal spree at Mayplace Road East
Angels rattle in seven
The scoreline says it all! Steve McKimm had a glut of strikers available for the Angels 4th pre-season friendly against Phoenix Sports and they certainly made their hosts pay with a second half bombardment that threatened at one point to reach double figures taking into account the number of chances created.
Phoenix Sports arguably had the better of the first quarter of an hour and should have gone ahead on 13 minutes when their no 9 had a clear header on goal but the effort was just over. It was an expensive miss as from then on Tonbridge started to take a grip on the game. It was Tommy Whitnell playing in perhaps his favourite position in the hole just behind the two strikers who did the damage scoring in the 17th minute converting a Dan Thompson cross and then again in the 42nd minute this time from a Liam Smith cross who was having a fine game out on the right flank.
The second half was largely one way traffic as the Angels took total control. On 49 minutes Thompson and McCollin combined beautifully to completely bamboozle the Phoenix defence with McCollin finishing with grace and ease. Five minutes later a Tonbridge corner was not dealt with efficiently by the home defence and the ball ran to Craig Stone who drilled the ball home from just outside the 18 yd box. The 59th minute saw a wicked cross from Jay Siva turned into his own net by a bemused Phoenix defender and then two minutes later Smith got into the act with a sharp shot from close in.
Alex Akrofi hit the bar in the 63rd minute and at this stage it looked as if Phoenix Sports were about to throw in the towel, but to their credit they kept going and in the 67th minute their free kick was not dealt with by the Angels defence and at last the home side were able to get on the scoresheet. Two minutes later they scored again with Anthony di Bernardo misjudging a corner.
Any hopes of some kind of miracle comeback were dashed in the 80th minute when Alex Akrofi got on the scoresheet to grab the Angels seventh goal.
Afterwards, Angels boss, Steve McKimm said: "Yes I'm pleased with the result but I'm not getting carried away as they had one or two missing today whereas I had a few options. We've tried out a few things with the formation this afternoon, three at the back and three up front at various times and that's been helpful. I was disappointed with the two goals conceded as they came from our mistakes and I've gone through that with them, but overall I've got to be pleased with the way things are going."
