First win for Angels in pre- season programme

Wonder strike from Liam seals win

It was very much an experimental line up that took the field for the away side at Greatness Park with Manager, Steve McKimm wanting to have a really good look at various trialists and some other players that had come calling in recent days to get themselves a club before the season starts.

In fact bearing in mind few of the players would have competed together they gave a very competent showing taking the lead in the 23rd minute through Baselle Aristide who punching on a loose ball saw his initial effort blocked by the Sevenoaks keeper only to poke home the rebound. All the young trialists did well but they were certainly helped by the presence of ex AFC Wimbledon playmaker Tom Beere who was often pulling the strings in some of the best moves and of course played several games for the Angels in the earlier part of last season.

Still one goal to the good at the break, McKimm largely kept faith with the unfamiliar look for the start of the second period but it wasn’t long before Sevenoaks scored a deserved equaliser through Frankie Sawyer. The Angels management team decided at this point they had seen enough and made some wholesale substitutions which resulted in virtually a 1st team squad on the pitch. However the game still remained a very even and watchable affair with the play moving from end to end. Joe Turner gave the Sevenoaks right back plenty to think about while for the hosts their no 17 had an excellent game in the heart of midfield.

It looked likely the deadlock wouldn’t be broken but suddenly in the 90th minute after some excellent hold up play from Alex Reid the ball eventually fell to left full back Liam Smith just inside the Sevenoaks half. Making progress quickly deep into the final third he jinked his way past three defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot past the startled Town ‘keeper to win the game for the Angels.

It was perhaps hard lines on Sevenoaks who had done enough to gain the draw against their Bostik Premier visitors, but Liam won’t be worrying too much about that!
